U-S Senator Ben Nelson is applauding the efforts of the 35 fire departments that battled the Fairfield Creek Wildfire and several others in north-central Nebraska. He says this is a prime example of how fast the federal government can assist states during a crisis situation.
He says federal and out-of-state crews along with the forest service provided assistance to the local volunteer departments when they were exhausted and it was difficult for them to continue.
Senator Nelson says it is likely this fire will receive a federal disaster declaration and that means three-fourths of the cost of the firefighting will be reimbursed by the federal government. The estimated cost of fighting this fire is $2.5-million dollars.
