One group is hoping to bring the mounting, $16-trillion national debt back into the spotlight this election year.
President of the “Public Notice Research and Education Fund” Gretchen Hamel says the problem is lawmakers in Washington often look to quick fix problems.
“(The national debt) is something that can’t be solved like that”, Hamel says. “This doesn’t deserve a band-aid. This deserves a hard look at the problem… the root cause of it is Washington’s over-spending”.
Hamel says very little is being done and only a few lawmakers are working on the issue. She says it’s up to Nebraska and other states to hold their elected officials accountable and that they stick to their promises.
The group has put out advertisements, targeting both Republicans and Democrats, over the handling of the deficit and to raise awareness.
