It is the busy season at the Nebraska Regional Poison Center. Public Education Coordinator and Information Specialist Joan McVoy says one of the first questions callers usually ask is if they need to make a trip to the emergency room. McVoy says about 75-percent of the problems people call the Poison Center for can be safely managed at home.
Calls to the Nebraska Regional Poison Center by uninsured residents increased 67-percent in the past ten years. McVoy says calls to the Poison Center save about 21-million dollars by preventing unnecessary emergency room visits each year. Some of the biggest concerns as we wrap up summer and head into fall are excessive use of insect repellents containing DEET, bee stings, poisonous plants and berries and from contact with bleach.
