Chadron State College has cancelled classes for the rest of the week because of wildfires in the area.
The school said Thursday morning that classes won’t be held today or Friday but the campus will stay open.
CSC officials say cancelling classes will allow students wanting to leave for Labor Day weekend to head off early.
Dale Grant is with the school and says, “The campus is in no imminent danger, but when we’re dealing with something as uncertain as wildfires we want to be extremely cautious.”
Grant said the school’s decision is not an evacuation and students living in residence halls are allowed to stay. Students will get emergency notifications through their MyCSC portal.
In a news release from the school, it says Highway 385 south of Chadron was closed, but was open north of Chadron.
Residents on the south end of Chadron were evacuated from their homes overnight Wednesday.
