Doane jumped out to a 28-0 lead and came away with a season-opening 41-28 victory over Briar Cliff University on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers scored on their first four possessions of the game while the defense held the Chargers and forced three three-and-out series in the first four possessions.
Doane finished the game with a balanced offensive output as they had 191 yards on the ground and 222 through the air. Briar Cliff posted 86 rushing yards and 220 passing yards. Both team had three turnovers in the game; the Chargers fumbled the ball seven times and lost three of them.
Alex Dose led the Doane ground game with 71 yards on 12 carries, an average of 5.9 per carry. Eric Morrison-Smith posted 42 yards on eight carries, an average of 5.2.
Nebraska Wesleyan scored 16 unanswered points in the third quarter to rally from a first half deficit then the Prairie Wolves defense made a last minute red zone stop to seal a 25-20 victory for NWU over Saint Mary (Kan.) in the 2012 football season opener on Saturday (Sept. 1) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln.
NWU extends their streak to nine straight home non-conference victories and 11 straight regular season non-conference victories.
