The 8th-ranked Missouri Western State Griffons ran for 243 yards in the second half, and scored touchdowns on four straight drives, to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 38-14, Saturday night in St. Joseph, Mo. The Lopers fall to 0-3 (0-3 MIAA). UNK tied the game at seven early in the second quarter on a 58-yard run by senior Tommy Flanagan. However, Western used a nine play, 87-yard scoring drive to end the first half and go into the locker room up 14-7.
Senior placekicker Max Martin booted a 42-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining to give Wayne State a 20-17 Northern Sun Conference football win Saturday afternoon over Bemidji State at Bemidji, Minnesota. It was Martin’s third game-winning kick in the last two seasons for the Wildcats, now 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC.
The Eagles lost 14-point leads twice, but Nathan Ross caught touchdown passes of 38 and 54 yards in the final nine minutes to help Chadron State pull out the win in its conference opener, 41-30 over Colorado-Mesa. The Eagles gained 552 yards in the game. Chadron State improves to 2-1 on the year.
