Republican state senators line up behind Republican United States Senate candidate Deb Fischer during a Capitol Rotunda news conference on Columbus Day.
Legislative Speaker Mike Flood opened a news conference attended by many of Fischer’s colleagues in the Unicameral.
“Deb Fischer is one of the most honest and ethical people that I know. We know these negative ads are for Bob Kerrey and he is just wrong. He’s wrong about Deb,” Flood stated. “She has served Nebraska honorably, honestly and very effectively.”
Fischer is running for the United States Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Ben Nelson. She is opposed by Democrat Bob Kerrey, who held the seat before Nelson.
Flood said Fischer understands how to work across the aisle with Democrats.
“She’s a common sense conservative who sticks to her principles, but she’s also demonstrated a clear desire to find common ground and compromise with Democrats in order to do what is best for Nebraska,” according to Flood.
Fischer has received the endorsement of 70 current and former members of the legislature, all Republicans.
Fischer dismissed questions from reporters about why no Democratic state senators have endorsed her, stating during the news conference that the important question is who she would work with if elected to the United States Senate.
“And I have a record here in Nebraska of working across the aisle with members of both parties and I certainly would pledge to you, I pledge to all Nebraskans of either party, it doesn’t matter, if I’m so honored to be elected United States Senator I will work with and represent all Nebraskans,” Fischer stated.
Fischer stated that her first priority bill after being elected to the legislature was sponsored by a Democrat and that she has supported legislation sponsored by both Republicans and Democrats.
“So, I have a proven record of working with Democrats, prioritizing their bills, getting those bills passed,” Fischer asserted. “I’d say, if you look at Mr. Kerrey’s record, where he voted with his party close to 90% of the time that would tell a different story.”
