Nebraska hopes to attract military veterans seeking a place to settle down after serving their country.
Gov. Dave Heineman and State Labor Department Director Cathy Lang during a news conference at the Capitol this morning unveiled a new video produced to draw veterans seeking a second career to the state.
Lang stated those leaving the military can prove very attractive to a variety of businesses.
“But these young people who have gone into service maybe right after high school or right out of the job they had after high school have certainly elevated their skill sets and they now have completely new skill sets to employ in the civilian workforce,” according to Lang. “And our hope is that they will consider coming to Nebraska to utilize those skills in our economy.”
The video, played during the news conference, emphasizes the job opportunities and the quality of life Nebraska has to offer. Heineman introduces the video, but veterans star in it, describing why they have chosen to make Nebraska home.
Heineman acknowledged a mix of motives for seeking to attract veterans to the state.
“I’d like to think we’re doing our patriotic duty, but we’re also trying to help young men and women who want to take care of their families and need a job and we have a lot of jobs to offer here in Nebraska,” Heineman said.
Heineman said the video builds on the success of the state participation into the United States Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes fairs in Omaha, Lincoln and Norfolk.
Lang said the video aims at those leaving the military, but not yet ready to retire.
“Those who come out of active service are probably highly mobile, they have as I’ve said before new skill sets to deploy in the civilian workforce. They may be predominantly younger, although not necessarily, and they may be looking for that next, best opportunity,” Lang stated.
The three Hiring Our Heroes events attracted 600 veterans and 200 employers. Additional hiring fairs will be held in Nebraska over the next few months.
