An election fraud unit has been formed by the Secretary of State to hear from the public and investigation any suspicious activity.
Anyone who suspects voter fraud can call the unit and Deputy Secretary of State Neal Erickson says the office welcomes the input, though voter fraud doesn’t seem to be a problem in Nebraska.
“Certainly, it’s possible,” Erickson tells Nebraska Radio Network. “Do we see any systemic or fraudulent schemes out there? Those are very rare.”
Erickson says the unit, which has operated for three election cycles, hasn’t uncovered any organized effort to change the outcome of an election. It did receive a call in 2008 that led to the conviction of a person for submitting a false voter registration form.
People can call toll free (888) 727-0007 or (402) 471-2555 to report complaints.
The Secretary of State’s office says all complaints will be handled in a confidential manner. If the election fraud unit determines that a complaint is credible, personnel from the office will forward it to the proper local, state or federal law enforcement agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
