Speaker of the Legislature Sen. Mike Flood will host a news conference this evening with his wife in Norfolk, widely believed to be a formal announcement of his candidacy for governor.
The news conference is scheduled to begin at 7 o’clock this evening at the Divots Conference Center in Norfolk.
A source close to Flood says that the Speaker will announce that he will enter the Republican Party primary for governor. That will create a contest for the Republican nomination. Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy has already announced he will run for governor and has received the backing of Gov. Dave Heineman.
Flood, a senator from Norfolk, was first elected to the legislature in 2004. In 2007, colleagues elected Flood Speaker. He won re-election in 2008.
Flood is both a lawyer and a broadcaster. He is a graduate of the Notre Dame and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Law School. Flood runs two radio stations in Norfolk.
Flood, 37, and his wife, Mandi, have two children.
