Homeless Nebraska and Iowa veterans can come in from the cold and get assistance during a “Stand Down” on Saturday sponsored by the VA Nebraska -Western Iowa Health Care System. Public Affairs Officer Will Ackerman says those attending will be paired with a volunteer who will accompany the veteran thorough several station.
Those stations include a health screening and general VA assessment. They will also learn about what benefits they may be eligible for. Several community organizations are teaming with the VA to help veterans with services they may be eligible for as well.
The veteran will also be provided a hot meal and free clothing is available.
The “Stand Down” is one of the VA’s many programs to reach out and serve homeless veterans in Nebraska and western Iowa. The event is Saturday at the Omaha Civic Center from 9 until noon.
