If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Thousands of people are receiving a phony text message offering them free gift cards. Nebraska Better Business Bureau President Jim Hegarty wants to get the word out so people don’t fall for it thinking they are getting a windfall right before the holidays.
Hegarty says the text messages states you are the winner of a $1,000 Target gift card and should log onto to a website for details. He says this is a phishing scam to get your personal information. By logging on to that site the “winner” open themselves up to countless emails from with offers from other companies.
Hegarty says it is likely your personal information will be sold. Nebraska is working with BBB’s and it is believed the text is from New York. There have been several similar phishing scams using legitimate business names, including Wal-Mart and even the BBB this year.
