ESPN reported on Saturday that Maryland is having serious negotiations with the Big Ten Conference and if that agreement were to fall into place and the Terrapins leave the Atlantic Coast Conference, it would open the door for Rutgers to leave the Big East to join as well.
The addition would give the Big Ten 14 school just ahead of their new media rights negotiations for 2017. While no official announcement has been made, the network reported it could happen as early as Monday.
One major issue for Maryland would be paying the ACC an exit of $50 million. Rutgers’ exit fee to the Big East would be $10 million with a 27-month notice.
