Sophomore Austin Chatman had a career-high 11 assists and Doug McDermott scored 24 points in 22 minutes as Creighton men’s basketball rolled to an 87-58 victory over Presbyterian on Sunday afternoon before 16,801 fans.
Ranked 13th in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 15th by the Associated Press, Creighton has now started 3-0 for the 12th time in 14 seasons.
McDermott, held to five points on Wednesday, scored Creighton’s first seven points on Sunday, including a fast-break dunk off a feed from Grant Gibbs. Creighton broke open a 10-7 game with a 12-0 run featuring a Jahenns Manigat trey, then three consecutive Ethan Wragge three-pointers. With Chatman dishing nine assists and McDermott scoring 20 points, the Jays led 43-17 at the half.
Presbyterian never came closer than 26 points in the second half. Jordan Downing had 25 points to lead the Blue Hose.
Creighton returns home on Tuesday with a 7 pm game vs. Longwood.
