Nebraskans for Civic Reform filed a federal Help America Vote Act complaint against Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps. Executive Director Adam Morfeld says the complaint comes after their members observed polling places in Douglas County on Election Day.
Morfeld says he saw seven voters at one location within a half-an-hour denied a provisional ballot because they did not have a “voter identification number”. He says they called the election commission office to get the I-D number but the line was constantly busy due to the high volume of calls. He says other members observed only 30 of nearly 200 polling locations in Omaha and saw voters denied a provisional ballot at nine locations.
Morfeld says federal law only requires that voter claim they are at the correct precinct and registered to vote in order to receive a provisional ballot and that state law follows suit. The complaint was filed with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office.
