There is a new challenge for drivers in Nebraska’s largest city. City Engineer Todd Pfitzer says drivers may think they are going the wrong way down a one-way street but it is actually back-in angel parking.
Pfitzer says the concept is a safety feature. The local bicycling community brought this to the city’s attention and pushed the city to add the new lanes. He says drivers have a much better view of pedestrians, oncoming traffic and bicycles with the back-in stalls.
Pfitzer says it is also helpful for those parking. He says when children get out of a back seat they are near oncoming traffic. This concept puts children closer to a sidewalk and out of danger.
The new stalls are in the downtown and midtown – Dundee areas. More are planned throughout the city.
