Holiday shopping is again in full swing across Nebraska and whether you make your purchases in a small town or a big city there are some safety tips to follow. Omaha Police Officer Michael Pecha says safety starts when parking your car.
He recommends parking in a well let area. Stay away from overgrown bushes and trees and shop at locations that have police or security patrols. He also recommends putting cell phones, electronics, GPS units and expensive jewelry in the trunk to prevent thieves from breaking into your car.
While shopping it is a good idea to carry a limited amount of cash and bring only one credit card. That way if your wallet is stolen you only have one card to report. While walking to the parking lot it is recommended to pay attention to your surroundings and have your keys in hand and the alarm panic button ready to activate. If you are approached by a stranger yell, scream and hit the panic button. If you are approached by someone with a weapon remember your life is more important than your car, purse or jewelry.
