A Nebraska native is reportedly being considered for one of the nation’s top military positions — Secretary of Defense.
Reports say former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, a Republican and a decorated Vietnam War veteran, is President Obama’s pick to replace Leon Panetta as the head of the Pentagon.
Panetta’s expected to step down shortly and Hagel could be named as soon as next week.
Hagel is a 66-year-old North Platte native who was first elected to the Senate in 1996, winning re-election in 2002.
Now teaching at Georgetown University, Hagel’s also chairman of the Atlantic Council and co-chairs the president’s Intelligence Advisory Board.
An opponent of the Iraq war, Hagel was rumored as a possible Obama pick for Vice President in 2008.
