Gov. Dave Heineman has ordered flags at half-staff in wake of the deadly school shooting in Connecticut.
Heineman today, in accordance with the proclamation from President Obama, announced all United States and Nebraska flags will be flown at half-staff in respect for the victims of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
It appears a young gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School before he shot and killed himself. The school is located about 60 miles northeast of New York City. Law enforcement at the scene also report one injury.
The shootings took place in two rooms at the school. Law enforcement reports 18 children died at the scene. Two died after being taken to hospitals.
Authorities identify the shooter as 20-year-old Adam Lanza. His younger brother is being held as authorities try to determine whether he was a possible second shooter. Lanza’s mother, Nancy Lanza, taught at the school. She is presumed dead.
Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset, December 18, 2012.
