The Class A boys basketball state record of 41 straight wins will be shared by Grand Island (’47-‘)49 and this current class from Omaha Central. The Eagles, who are playing in the City of Palms Class in Ft Myers, FL., lost to Long Beach Poly, the #2 high school team in the nation, 52-49. Poly hit a three pointer with two seconds left to edge Omaha Central 52-49 in the quarterfinals.
Central coach Eric Behrens told the Omaha World Herald after the game, the players were stinging from the tough loss.
“They’re in tears. They’re heartbroken. They really fought and really wanted to win that game. That’s how it should be. If it wasn’t important, it wouldn’t hurt. And so it hurts because they cared, and this was really important to them. I’m proud of the fact that they’re hurt by a loss.”
