The Christmas holiday has begun early in Nebraska.
At least, for state workers.
Gov. Dave Heineman has announced that state buildings will be closed today and tomorrow. The announcement comes in compliance with President Obama’s executive order closing federal buildings and giving federal employees Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day off.
State law calls for state workers to receive the same benefits federal employees receive. Whenever the President gives federal employees paid time off, the State of Nebraska grants the same benefits to state employees.
There are exceptions. Essential services, such as law enforcement, security and military personnel, will work the holiday.
