A new legislative session is underway at the state Capitol in Lincoln with a new Speaker of the Legislature elected.
The Unicameral has elected Sen. Greg Adams of York as Speaker during the initial day of the 102nd Legislature.
Adams told colleagues he comes to the position with no political agenda, but an agenda of fairness above all to help make good public policy.
“And an agenda for protecting and promulgating the integrity and the culture and the history of this institution,” Adams stated.
Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy presided over the opening ceremonies. State Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike Heavican administered the oath of office to new and newly elected senators. This session features 15 senators who won re-election in November, 10 who won election for the first time and the return of Ernie Chambers, who served 38 years before being forced to sit out a term by term limits.
Lawmakers can introduce bills beginning tomorrow. The legislative session is scheduled to conclude June 5th.
