The Creighton women’s basketball team suffered its first loss in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, 67-45, at Wichita State on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The loss dropped Creighton to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in MVC play. Wichita State, meanwhile, moved to 10-6 on the season and 4-0 in MVC action.
The Bluejays got off to a fast start as Creighton opened the game with an 11-0 run in the opening 3:26 to force a timeout by Wichita State head coach Jody Adams. Juniors Sarah Nelson and Alyssa Kamphaus led the Jays early burst with four points each.
Unfortunately Wichita State responded to its head coach, outscoring Creighton 28-13 over the ensuing 16:34 to take a 28-24 into haltime.
The Shockers forced Creighton into 12 first half turnovers, leading to 13 of their 28 points.
Wichita State maintained its defensive pressure in the second half as the Shockers keep the Jays out of any offensive rhythm by forcing 22 turnovers in the game and limiting Creighton’s bench to just three points.
Nelson finished with a team-high 17 points in the loss, while senior Ally Jensen finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for Creighton.
Wichita State was led by a game-high 20 points by Alex Harden and a career-best 16 points from Jasmine Jones.
Creighton returns to action on Monday, Jan. 21 as the Jays battle Missouri State at 7:05 p.m.
