If LB 439 is approved smokers will be paying a lot more for a pack of cigarettes. Grand Island State Senator Mike Gloor introduced the bill that would increase the state tax 72-cents per pack of cigarettes. That would bring the state tax total to $1.36.
Senator Gloor says the money raised from the increased tax would help the state cover their increased costs due to the Affordable Health Care Act.
He says the tax on tobacco has not gone up for ten years and he is seeing a lot of support for the bill. Senator Gloor says it may also be the incentive for many Nebraskans to kick the habit.
