Governor Dave Heineman hopes to eliminate the state’s income tax in an effort to promote job growth. Dave Nelson is president of the Farm Bureau Federation – Nebraska who says they would like to join in the discussion and add property tax to the equation.
Nelson says everyone in the state wants good paying jobs in Nebraska. He says, “The sales tax is a fair tax when it is broad-based but when you target certain entities you pick winners and losers and that doesn’t make sense.”
Nelson fears a huge tax increase on farm and ranch families. He says that seems counter-productive since that sector has kept Nebraska’s economy strong over the past few years. He says raising taxes on the agriculture industry with the hope of cutting taxes elsewhere to promote job growth is not going in the right direction. That is why his group is calling for a broad discussion on how the state tax system works.
