Lincoln police office Ben Kopsa took the stand during the first day of testimony against former Husker football player Alfonzo Dennard, on trial for assault on an officer, misdemeanor assault of another man and resisting arrest. Officer Kopsa testified he and Dennard were face-to-face when Dennard threw punch and hit him. Kopsa said, “It hurt,” rating the pain an 8 on a scale of 1-to-10.
When Dennard testifies this week, he will say that Kopsa came up from behind him and that he didn’t know it was an officer. His reaction was to raise his arm and elbow and swing around to get out of the way and break free.
Kopsa approached Dennard after he testified he saw Dennard punch another man on the street outside a bar. Dennard will claim it was someone else who threw the punch. He will admit to resisting arrest, but is fighting the assault charges.
The trial will wrap up later this week.
