When you get home tonight take a few minutes to pack a few essentials in your vehicle. A major winter storm is targeting Nebraska and Liz Dorland with the Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross wants everyone to be prepared in case they get stranded on the road.
Dorland says the American Red Cross suggests that car survival kit includes blankets, dry clothing, socks, extra hats and gloves. The list includes waterproof boots in case you have to walk a ways in bad weather. The kit should also include extra non-perishable food, bottled water, flashlight, extra batteries, a battery powered radio and a cell phone charger.
Dorland also suggests you put a shovel in your vehicle as well as a bag of sand or cat litter in case you need extra traction if you are stuck.
Dorland says the Heartland Chapter is ready in case they are called on to help during the snow. Volunteers are ready to set up shelters for those left in the dark without electrical service.
