It appears former Nebraska United States Sen. Chuck Hagel will become the next Secretary of Defense.
The Senate in Washington has voted 71 to 27 to end a Republican-led filibuster of Hagel. The vote clears the obstacle to voting on Hagel’s confirmation. Several Republicans in the Senate had held up the vote for a variety of reasons, including a demand for more information on the September 11th attack on the United States compound in Benghazi last year. Questions also have been raised about Hagel’s support of Israel and how he would advise President Barack Obama on Iran.
With the procedural obstacle removed, a confirmation vote on Hagel could come as early as this evening or tomorrow morning. It appears the administration has the votes needed to confirm Hagel.
