It is Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s first day on the job. The U-S Senate voted to confirm Hagel on Tuesday. Four Republicans backed Hagel’s nomination but Nebraska U-S Senator Deb Fischer was not one of them.
Senator Fischer says he was not able to address several issues or answer several questions. She says because of the poor job he did during the confirmation hearing and with private conversations with Hagel, she felt she could not in good conscience recommend he be confirmed.
The final vote Tuesday was 58 to 41 with four Republicans voting for Hagel’s nomination. Hagel was sworn in this morning.
