The mayor of Grand Island was arrested on a drunk driving charge over the weekend.
Mayor Jay Vavricek was picked up Saturday night in Howard County, where he owns a hunting cabin.
The mayor issued a written release from Grand Island City Hall late Sunday afternoon saying, “I am sorry and embarrassed for the events that have occurred in the last 24 hours.”
Vavricek also apologized to his family, those who depend on him, and the community. He promised to take “corrective action” so they will never be affected like this again.
The 60-year-old Vavricek was first elected Grand Island’s mayor in 2002, ran an unsucessful campaign for congress in 2006, and was reelected mayor in 2010.
