Government health officials are very concerned about the drug resistant “super bug” that is being reported in our nation’s hospitals and extended care facilities. Alegent Creighton Health Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Rick Starlin says this bacterium is extremely resistant to antibiotics therefore making it difficult to treat.
Dr. Starlin says the C-D-C is recommending health care facilities do what they can to prevent the spread of this bacteria that can cause pneumonia, urinary tract infections as well as blood stream infections from medical devices like ventilators and catheters.
Dr. Starlin says there have been no cases at Alegent Health facilities in the Omaha metro area.
In 2012, 200 hospitals and care facilities in the U-S reported at least one patient that contracted nightmare bacteria that is antibiotic resistant.
