Malcolm State Senator Ken Haar’s LB 619 would require all school districts in the state to offer sexual health education as part of their curriculum. Senator Haar says along with standard sex education the bill includes the impact of alcohol and drug use on decision making, social situations, peer pressure and STD’s.
Senator Haar says there are many issues that can be added to the sex education classes currently being offered by districts. He says instruction and material shall not promote bias against race, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity.
Students would be excused from the class if their parents objected and parents also have full access to all the materials taught in the class. A hearing on the bill is scheduled for today.
