Mission San Juan Capistrano may have their swallows but Nebraska has the Sandhill Cranes. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesman Greg Wagner says there are more than 200,000 Sandhill Cranes in the Platte River Valley between Kearney and Grand Island. At the peak of the season there will be more than 600,000 Sandhill Cranes in that region.
Wagner says along with the Sandhill Cranes there are millions of Snow Geese and hundreds of ducks. The peak of the Sandhill Crane season is about a week away and the cranes will remain in Nebraska through the first week of April.
About 70-thousand visitors will head to central Nebraska to view the Sandhill Cranes. This has about an 8-million dollar economic impact on central Nebraska.
