The I-R-S may have money waiting for you. I-R-S spokesman for Nebraska Christopher Miller says there are about 4,600 Nebraskans that didn’t file returns in 2009 and about half of them could be owed $500 or more and be eligible for credits that could increase the refund.
Miller says some people may not have filed because they had too little income to require a tax return even though they had taxes withheld from their wages or made quarterly estimated payments. Miller says nearly half of those who didn’t file have at least $500 waiting for them.
The 2009 filing expires on April 15th. Refunds may be withheld if the taxpayer didn’t file returns for 2010 and 2011.
Nationally, just over $917-million may be waiting for some 984-thousand taxpayers who did not file a return in 2009. If no return is filed to claim a refund within three years the money becomes property of the U-S Treasury.
