Nebraska City officials want to make it easier for residents and visitors to get around the city’s main business district.
The city council voted this week to proceed with a plan to provide free bicycles for shoppers along Central Avenue.
City Administrator Joe Johnson says bikes and bike racks will be placed at three locations along the street.
“The bikes will be painted an odd color to hopefully persuade people not to steal them,” Johnson says. “They’ll be like a lime green or a hunter orange or something of that nature.”
The free bike plan was proposed by two local women.
Johnson says the city attorney will explore any liability issues connected to the free bikes and he’ll return to the council with a recommendation.
