Mattie Fowler lined a 2-0 pitch into center field for a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh, that gave the 20th ranked Nebraska softball team a 3-2 victory over Nebraska-Omaha. Earlier in the game, Fowler gave NU a 1-0 lead when a deep fly ball to right field tipped off Lindsay Redding’s glove and went over the fence for a home run.
Tatum Edwards took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before running into some tough luck. A leadoff error, and two slow hit balls led to two runs for the Mavericks and a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskers managed to get two runners in scoring position with two outs and Fowler delivered the big hit. Fowler, a sophomore, has a knack for coming up big in close games. She had the game-winning hit in five of Nebraska’s 14 Big Ten victories a year ago and also had the game-winning hit in two of the Huskers’ three extra-inning victories in 2012.
Fowler finished 2-for-3 on Tuesday with a season-high three RBIs. Her third-inning home run was her first of the season.
Nebraska returns to action today, hosting a doubleheader with North Dakota State at 2 p.m
