A Beatrice attorney is being appointed by Governor Dave Heineman to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
Robert Schafer was named by Heineman to fill the vacancy created when former State Senator Lavon Heidemann was chosen as Lieutenant Governor.
The 45-year-old Schafer, a former Beatrice city attorney, is managing partner in a Beatrice law firm and runs a farm in Pawnee County. Schafer earned business and law degrees from UNL . He says he plans to run for the Regents position after the end of this term.
Schafer says keeping a college education affordable will be one of the major issues facing board members in the coming years, and he says the university’s role in Nebraska’s economic development is critical.
Schafer was among several candidates who applied for the District 5 seat on the Board of Regents. He serves in the Nebraska Air National Guard as a Major and Staff Judge Advocate for the 155th Air Refueling Wing.
