Creighton baseball opened the MVC conference season with a 6-1 road win over Evansville on Friday, March 21.
The win lifted Creighton to 11-4 on the season and 1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, while Evansville fell to 7-12 overall and 0-1 in MVC play.
The Jays got off to a quick start with two runs in the top of the first. Junior Federico Castagninilaced a one-out single up the middle and with two down, junior Mike Gerber was hit by a pitch. Senior Alex Staehely took advantage of the early opportunity with an RBI single up the middle. Walks to freshman Reagan Fowler and senior Brennan Murphy extended Creighton’s lead to 2-0.
Evansville got a run back in the bottom of the first, but that was all freshman Tommy Strunc would surrender in his fifth start of the season.
The Jays’ offense tacked on two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from sophomore Jake Peterand Staehely. Sophomore Kevin Lamb led the inning offf with a single through the left side. Lamb took second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Brad McKewon and scored on Peter’s single. After a walk to Gerber, Staehely chased in Peter with a single into left.
Creighton added some insurance in the ninth as Lamb plated Fowler and Murphy with a two-out, two-run single up the middle.
Strunc moved to 4-0 on the season with the win, allowing one run on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Relievers Nick Highberger, Mark Winkelman and Peter held the Purple Aces off the board over the final three frames.
Evansville’s Kyle Freeland (2-4) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Four Jays finished with two hits in the game, led by Gerber’s 2-for-3 day. Staehely and Lamb each delivered two RBI in the game.
Creighton and Evansville will complete the three game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
