A potential bomb scare at U.S. Senator Deb Fischer’s office in Lincoln today turned out to be a false alarm.
Staffers reported spotting a suspicious package outside the senator’s office in the Haymarket district about 8:45 this morning.
The “package” was actually a bag, like a plastic garbage bag, sitting on a chair right under the U.S. Senate emblem.
The bomb squad from the Lincoln Fire Department responded and streets were blocked off for 20 minutes or so.
What was in the bag? Just somebody’s garbage, apparently, a couple of envelopes and a metal can.
Still, officials say they’d rather check out these reports than have someone ignore what could be a deadly threat.
Following Monday’s bombings at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured more than 170, several suspicious letters have been reported that were sent to the White House and Senate offices in Washington D.C. At least one of them contained the poison, ricin.
