Car trouble ended a pursuit in south-central Nebraska, leading to the arrest of two people accused in a string of robberies in Minnesota and South Dakota.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports 24-year-old Jarrod Birch and 19-year-old Alyssa Beard, both from Virginia Beach, VA, have been arrested after attempting to flee from troopers.
The patrol reports a trooper observed a car traveling west on Interstate 80 near the Lexington Interchange Monday afternoon that matched the description of the car wanted in the series of robberies.
The trooper followed the car as it exited the interstate at the Darr Interchange in Dawson County, driving north to Highway 30, then heading west.
A second trooper arrived and the two troopers attempted a traffic stop. After pulling off to the shoulder, Birch sped off when the troopers approached. The trooper pursued on Highway 30 and the pursuit ended about two miles west of Cozad after engine trouble forced the car to the side of the road.
The troopers arrested Birch and Beard. A search uncovered three handguns and burglary tools, all believed to be used during the recent robberies.
Birch has been charged with felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of stolen property.
Beard is listed as a missing person from Petersburg, VA. She is charged with possession of stolen property and carrying a concealed weapon.
Both are being held in the Dawson County jail.
