In a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Softball Championship semifinal, the top-seeded Creighton softball team dropped a tight one-run game to fourth-seeded Northern Iowa 1-0 at the CU Sports Complex.
Creighton, the 2013 MVC regular-season champion, finished the year with a record of 29-18. UNI improved to 25-24 with the win and advanced to Saturday’s MVC Final against No. 2 seed Drake or No. 7 seed Evansville.
Creighton managed four hits against UNI starter Jamie Fisher. Three of those came off of the bat of junior Ellen Homan. Sophomore Liz Dike posted the other Bluejay hit on the day. Fisher allowed just two walks to CU batters.
Junior Becca Changstrom started in the circle for the Jays.
Northern Iowa’s leadoff hitter opened the game with a first-pitch solo home run over the wall in left field to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
Neither team could score the rest of the way as the slim one-run Panther margin held up throughout the game.
The Bluejays’ best scoring chance came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third frame with no outs. An opening walk by senior Sammy Snygg and a pair of singles from Dike and Homan put three Jays on base.
However, UNI was able to get out of the inning with a force out at home, a strikeout and a force out at third to end the frame unscathed.
The contest marked the final game in a Creighton uniform for 2013 seniors Amy Baker, Ashley Frutosand Snygg.
Baker ended her prolific four-year CU career as the MVC career leader in home runs (58) as well as RBI (167).
Changstrom ended the season with a 22-9 record.
