New lake planned for western Douglas County

By 2016, a new lake will be ready for visitors at 168th and Fort Streets in west Omaha. John Winkler is the General Manager for the Papio Natural Resources District and says the NRD approved $42.6-million in bonds to pay for the new lake and dam site.

Winkler when it comes to that watershed it isn’t a matter of if it will flood but when and an eleven-mile stretch is one of the most flood prone and dangerous in the Midwest.

The new lake will provide many recreational opportunities including boating and fishing, picnic areas, hiking and biking trails and boat ramps.

It should be open in two or three years.
