Nebraska’s Mary Weatherholt came away with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 38 Aleksandra Josifoska in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, IL on Wednesday. Weatherholt picked up a straight-set victory over Josifoska for the second time in NCAA Tournament play this season, after defeating UNLV’s top singles player 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the NCAA Team Championships at the NU Varsity Tennis Courts on May 11.
Weatherholt, who is ranked No. 11 nationally by the ITA, improved to 26-1 on the year in singles play. It was her school-record 119th career singles victory and pushed her combined career victory total to 202. She advances to Thursday’s second round to face No. 43 Klara Fabikova, who defeated North Carolina’s No. 39 Whitney Kay, 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday. Weatherholt is scheduled to take on Fabikova at 8 a.m.
Weatherholt also will be competing in doubles action in the round of 32 on Thursday with partner Patricia Veresova. The third-seeded Huskers will face Georgia State’s Masa Grgan and Abigail Tere-Apisah at a time yet to be determined on Thursday. It will be sometime after 1:30 p.m.
