The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services suspends the daycare license of a provider in Blair. The department issued an emergency order last week shutting down operations of the Family Child Care Home operated by Kathy Matzen.
Child and Family Services were called to the daycare last December after the parents of a child reported the child’s hand had been struck with a knife. There was a mark on the child’s hand causing the boy pain. The parents also stated the child was sleeping on a bare mattress on the floor. It was also reported that Matzen’s son, Travis, shaved the child’s head without permission.
Matzen stated she did use her fingers to slap the back of the child’s hands after putting his hands on food. She denies the use of a knife. Reports show Matzen’s son shaved the child’s head in an effort to eliminate head lice after several outbreaks. Travis Matzen is charged with misdemeanor child abuse.
Matzen was arrested on May 29th and faces two counts of child abuse. The Department of Health and Human Services suspended her license and Matzen can not care for any children other than her own.
