The small town of Weeping Water in Cass County is mourning the death of one of its own. 51 year old Robert Hanes died Tuesday night. He was behind the wheel of an ambulance transporting a patient to a Lincoln hospital when a pick up cross the center line on Highway 34 and hit the ambulance head on.
The driver of the pickup is identified as William Witlatch of Syracuse. He was pronounced dead at the scene. There were two crew members on the ambulance and both suffered injuries. One of the crew member’s was Hanes daughter. The patient being transported suffered minor injuries.
Cass County dispatch had received a call regarding a reckless driver on Highway 34 prior to the crash. A deputy was responding to that call when the accident happened. That deputy was several miles away.
A memorial fund for Hanes has been established at Home State Bank in Louisville.
