U-S Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel stopped by his alma mater Wednesday. This is his first trip to Nebraska as Secretary of Defense and he spoke to a crowd of about 300 on the University of Nebraska – Omaha campus on the challenges facing the department today. He says as technology advances we have to change with it in order to protect and secure our nation.
Secretary Hagel says we live in a world where our homeland is vulnerable to cyber attacks and we must keep up with technology to protect our nation. He says issues are changing that will impact the world. That includes recent elections in Iran, uncertainty of North Korea’s intentions regarding nuclear capabilities and continued conflicts in Afghanistan. He also discussed how budget cuts to the Department of Defense will impact our nation.
Forty years ago U-S Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel returned from Vietnam and made the decision to attend UNO. He dedicated their Military – Veteran Services Office last Veteran’s Day and is very pleased with UNO’s commitment to provide support and services to those who served our nation. He says UNO continues to be a leader in veteran and military member educations and they took another significant step and waving application fees for military members and veterans.
