The family of a 93-year-old south Omaha woman is shocked and angry that someone could carry out such a brutal crime.
Omaha police and Omaha Fire Department Rescue were called to the home at 10th and Dorcus Sunday morning at 8:55 am to check on the well being of Louise Sollowin after the woman’s 70-year-old daughter called for help.
Police say when they arrived they found Sollowin lying unclothed in her bedroom and she was covered in blood. They also found the unclothed suspect passed out lying on top of the victim.
Sollowin was rushed to a hospital where she died Wednesday. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
The suspect is identified as 19-year-old Sergio Martinez-Perez. Martinez-Perez has no permanent address and his immigration status is unknown. He has told authorities he had been working in the Omaha area as a roofer.
Prior to Sollowin’s death, Martinez-Perez he had been charged with 1st degree sexual assault, 1st degree assault and burglary. He is being held without bond. Douglas County authorities are now considering charging Martinez-Perez with first-degree murder.
The Douglas County Attorney Chief Deputy Brenda Beadle is calling this one of the most disturbing cases she has ever worked. While the case remains under investigation authorities report it seems Perez had been out drinking and an incident sparked his anger and Sollowin was a random victim.
