Six Waverly American Legion Baseball players are in legal hot water forcing the team to forfeit the Class B Seniors State Championship game in Gering. Scottsbluff Police arrested or cited six players overnight Tuesday for Minor in Possession. One of the players was also arrested for destruction of property.
Scottsbluff Police responded to a report from a woman who says she watched a male bash her mailbox several times with a baseball bat and saw another man flee the area. The investigation led Police to a Scottsbluff hotel where police say they talked to several team members who’d been drinking.
Other reports of damaged mailboxes are being investigated including reports of two that were damaged on Sunday afternoon, two days prior to the overnight incident.
State Tournament Director Mike Hutchison says Waverly had to forfeit the championship because it was down to eight available players and teams cannot start a game without nine. Hickman/Norris was undefeated in the tournament and has been crowned champion with Elkhorn Mount Michael and Seward sharing runner-up honors.
