Admiral Cecil Haney will become the next commander of the United States Strategic Command.
The Senate has approved Haney’s nomination, acting on a confirmation recommendation made by the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Haney succeeds Air Force Gen. C. Robert Kehler, who took command of StratComm at the beginning of 2011.
“I congratulate Admiral Cecil Haney on his confirmation to be the next commander of U.S. Strategic Command,” Sen. Deb Fischer said in a written statement released by her office. “As a former Strategic Command deputy commander, he is no stranger to its mission and the people of Nebraska. I was happy to support his nomination and look forward to working with him on efforts to support STRATCOM’s mission.”
Haney left StratCom three years ago to become the Navy’s Pacific Fleet Commander.
StratCom is located at Offutt Air Force Base, just outside of Omaha. StratCom has several duties, including command of U.S. nuclear weapons.
