State officials have issued a health alert for toxic blue-green algae at Swan Creek Lake in Saline County.
Samples of water taken at Swan Creek exceeded the state health alert threshold of 20 parts per billion of total microcystin, a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.
Swimming beaches at Swan Creek have been closed. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted. Public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities remain open to the public.
Water samples from Swan Creek will have to dip below the 20 ppb threshold for two consecutive weeks before state officials lift the alert.
This is the only health alert now in effect.
State officials will monitor lakes weekly through the recreational season. Sampling results for toxic algae and bacteria are updated every Friday and posted on NDEQ’s web site, deq.ne.gov.
